Virtual reality

New technologies & classical music

Convinced that multiplying the ways into classical music and collaborating with other worlds can help even more people discover the classical repertoire, we have produced virtual-reality videos on two occasions.

Beethoven 360

After Mozart 360, ARTE and Insula orchestra continue their exploration of classical music in 360° with the world-famous first movement of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5. This extract is without doubt one of the most famous pages of the classical repertoire, yet it retains a share of mystery. What is Beethoven telling us? Is he telling us anything at all? And what does Laurence Equilbey seek to convey through her own interpretation? This new immersive experience takes us not only into the heart of the orchestra, but above all into the heart of conductor Laurence Equilbey’s vision of the Fifth Symphony — namely, a struggle between an oppressed people and a form of tyranny. This deeply personal reading is embodied by a set of visual projections, born of that interpretation and generated throughout the extract by all the musical parameters. Everything is encoded and takes shape before your eyes as beams or walls: pitch, density, dynamics, duration, attack… With Beethoven 360, musical material becomes visible! A 360° experience, with spatialised sound and binaural playback, to be enjoyed with or without a headset. Without a headset, watch the video below and move your smartphone (or your mouse on a computer) to explore the 360° view. With a virtual-reality headset, go directly to the YouTube app and launch the video. Duration: 6 minutes.

Mozart 360°

Mozart 360° was our very first experience with virtual reality, in 2016. Through virtual reality and 3D-sound technology, Mozart 360 invites you to an immersive experience at the heart of the sound itself. Experience it alongside the musicians, move through the orchestra, and enjoy a “physical reading” of the music.
