Immerse yourself in the expressive world of 17th-century ‘histoires sacrées’ with this programme shining a light on works by Ferrandini, M.A. Charpentier and Purcell, all of whom glorified this sacred musical genre with passion and contrast.
Purcell’s shortest oratorio, The Witch of Endor, transports us into the encounter between Saul, Samuel and the Witch of Endor. The eloquence here is fiery and intense. Charpentier, a prolific composer of the sacred music, has created an emblematic work: Le Reniement de Saint-Pierre, a work that perfectly captures the essence of the genre. In their quest for previously unpublished works, Il Caravaggio will also be performing Ferrandini’s rare Il Pianto di Maria, an expressive musical setting of the story of the Virgin at the foot of the cross: such drama in this music!
