À propos

An incandescent energy runs through this programme: that of a music questioning the figure of the hero, solo virtuosity, and the freedom of form.

The Coriolan overture opens the evening with the inner conflict of an exile torn between fury and renunciation—one of Beethoven’s most striking psychological portraits. Weber’s Clarinet Concerto No. 1 brings a luminous contrast: the clarinet asserts itself as a fully-fledged solo voice, and Pierre Génisson reveals its entire expressive range with eloquence.

Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8 concludes the programme on an unexpected note: not triumphant heroism, but a freedom of form played with irony and mischief.

On the podium, Raphaël Merlin—for many years the cellist of the Quatuor Ébène, now at the head of the Orchestre de chambre de Genève. A chamber musician at heart, whose sensitivity to dialogue and colour promises a reading both subtle and energetic.
