Les Talens Lyriques / Christophe Rousset

2h50 with interval

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
La Betulia Liberata

La Betulia Liberata
Judith was a strong woman! A virtuous Jewess from the town of Betulia, besieged by the Assyrians, she seduces her rival, General Holofernes, and cuts off his head, thereby saving her people. At only 14, Mozart took the libretto by the poet Metastasio, based on the Biblical narrative, to compose a two-act oratorio, La Betulia liberata. The inspired score owes much to his first ventures into opera, notably Mitridate. Christophe Rousset, conducting the Talens Lyriques, revives the rarely heard work, probably never performed in Mozart’s lifetime.
