Polychoral Works
Marc-Antoine Charpentier
Mass for four choirs

The polychoral works he heard during a stay in Rome came as a shock to the young Marc-Antoine Charpentier, providing the inspiration for the grandiose mass for four choirs, using all combinations of a sixteen-voice ensemble, a first ever for 17th century France and a work that, still today, is rarely performed. Yet, through which cities did Charpentier travel, which musicians did he hear? Cavalli in Venice, Merula in Cremona, Benevoli in Rome… The Correspondances ensemble offers to take the audience on an initiatory journey.
