Ludwig van Beethoven
Piano Concerto No 3
Mieczysław Weinberg
Symphony No 4

The Piano Concerto No 3 was a milestone in Beethoven’s career, and though it was the only concerto he wrote in a minor key, it was of major stylistic importance. A departure from the influence of Mozart, it prefigured Romanticism, with Beethoven himself in the role of soloist at the premiere. Utterly exhausted, he had not even had time to write out the last notes on the music sheet, to the bewilderment of the page turner. Mieczysław Weinberg is just one composer to be indebted to Beethoven. A friend of Shostakovich, his Symphony No 4 is more rarely played but is worthy of rediscovery twenty years after the Polish composer’s death.
